課程概述

Course Description
The course will introduce the aesthetics and politics of ruins from the 18th century to the Romantic period, and discuss how the aesthetics/politics of ruin appreciation are presented in the contemporary ruin poetry. First, the course will focus on perspectives on ruins from the late seventeenth century onwards. Besides, poetry which features on ruin sentiment in Dissolution, antiquarian interest, and the picturesque would also be covered. Next, the course will move on to the Romantic sentiments on ruins. We will discuss how Romantic aesthetics and philosophy in general contribute to people’s appropriation to ruins. The poet covered in this period is Wordsworth. And finally, we will focus on John Ruskin’s architectural theory and his perspective on ruins. Most importantly, we aim to trace a clear line of how Ruskin and Wordsworth is related in their appreciation of ruins.
